Training tips for American Pit Bulls - II

Training tips for American Pit Bulls - II -

As mentioned in the previous post, most people tend to view American Pit Bulls as aggressive and dangerous. This might be because of their aggressive response to other animals, especially dogs. But, one other rarely identified factor is the inadequate or improper training they receive when still puppies. This responsibility lies with owners who play a large role consciously or unconsciously in determining their pet’s behavior and adjustability.

Here are some tips you can make use of to ensure that you’re training reaps maximum benefits in terms of your Pit Bull’s overall behavior.
1. Start training your pet from day one: It’s never too early to begin training and your dog will turn out to be better adjusted to society if he has the benefit of it right from the start. Pit Bulls are animals that gain satisfaction from accomplishing challenging tasks that earn them your praise and affection. Use this knowledge to build a relationship that’s based on respect and teamwork.
2. Use Positive training methods as opposed to compulsion training: Compulsion training involves the use of a whip or other such disciplinary tools that certainly accomplish the job but don’t leave you feeling very good. Avoid such methods and instead opt for training your pet by identifying his primary motivational factor. It could be praise, a special snack, a favorite toy etc. Use this in conjunction with commands to get your dog to obey. Ensure that the leash is off when you engage in this training method to teach your American Pit Bull to obey your voice. Reward him instantly. Such training is fun for both of you and helps build a stronger bond.
3. Stay patient as you train your pet: Developing positive habits takes time and needs constant reinforcement and praise. Do not lose your patience if you fail to see improvements immediately. Show your dog commitment and you won’t regret it. Do that and you’ll soon find you’re proud to be identified by people as his owner.
